TINKERBROOK / METHODOLOGY

Show the work. State the limits.

A calculated value, a recommendation and a measurement answer different questions. We label them separately so a precise-looking number does not promise more than it can support.

Our original video test

Recorded on 8 October 2026: a 1280 × 720, 30 fps synthetic test chart with seeded noise, eight seconds long. It is generated test material, not camera footage. We encoded three H.264/AAC MP4 files with video targets of 500, 1,500 and 5,000 kbps. Audio used a 440 Hz test tone at a nominal 128 kbps.

Encoding environment: ffmpeg version 8.1.2-full_build-www.gyan.dev Copyright (c) 2000-2026 the FFmpeg developers. The same encoder preset and source were used for all three variants. A separate 60-second, 8 MB budget case looped that source.

FFprobe reports duration and average stream bitrates. The file system supplies the exact byte count. Frame 120 is extracted from each variant and the lossless source. For SSIM, inputs are aligned to the same frame timestamps and all 240 frames are compared; we publish the mean per-frame All score.

The test demonstrates these exports. Codec, preset, motion and source detail affect the result; we do not claim that a synthetic chart predicts every real video. The player starts muted because the test tone is not listening content.

Script timing and research

Time is text units divided by an editable rate, plus a visible allowance. English units and Korean eojeol are distinguished. Presets are working assumptions. The browser timer measures only elapsed time and current text units; it does not record or recognize speech. Published timing examples are arithmetic examples, not human trials.

The “min read” label on each guide is calculated the same way. We count the words in the guide’s body (headings, paragraphs, tables, lists and captions, but not the sources box), divide by 240 words per minute, the tool’s default silent-reading rate, and round up to a whole minute. It estimates reading the text only, not watching the sample videos or inspecting the files.
